Quan Ba, the gateway into the mountains
Quan Ba (Quản Bạ) is the first real mountain district most loop routes pass through, on the road up from Ha Giang City — the district most people's first proper viewpoint of the trip is in.
What Quan Ba actually is
The district you climb into first, riding Bac Sum Pass up from Ha Giang City — the point where the road stops being flat and the trip actually starts.
Heaven Gate and the Twin Mountains
Quan Ba Heaven Gate is the viewpoint at the top of Bac Sum Pass, looking back down over the valley to the Twin Mountains (Núi Đôi) below — the famous view, and usually the first proper stop on the Ha Giang to Cao Bang route.

When Heaven Gate is worth skipping the crowd
Heaven Gate is the one stop in this guide you can reach without leaving the main road, which means it sees more day-trip traffic than anywhere else on the loop — tour vans included. Early morning, before those vans arrive from Ha Giang City, is the only time it's actually quiet. The Twin Mountains viewpoint itself is a five-minute stop either way; don't plan more time around it than that.
