Day one never touches the main Loop. Dirt tracks west to a cave and to Khau Lan — a waterfall with no ticket booth and usually nobody in it.

Sleep on the White Cliff — add 1,200,000₫ (~$46) per person. Tent, gear carried up, dinner cooked on the ledge. Refunded in full if the weather moves us indoors.

Keep going where the tour buses turn around: the quiet border country of Cao Bang, the 14-turn Me Pia Pass, and Ban Gioc Waterfall — where we sleep next to the falls and see them at sunrise, before anyone else arrives.

Your guide is Matthew or a local trekking guide he works with — and you will know their name before you arrive. If the weather turns on camping night, you move to a private homestay room below the cliff, and nothing else changes.
