The best time to visit Ha Giang
September to November and March to May are the best months to ride the Ha Giang Loop. June to August brings the rain and the landslides that come with it. December to February is cold but clear, and worth it if you pack properly.
The short answer
The rain arrives with the summer and stays into the early autumn, and that is when the landslides happen — roads disappear, sometimes for days. September to November and March to May are the best months. December to February is spectacular and genuinely cold.

September to November
My favourite stretch to ride. The rains have usually finished, the roads have dried out, and the light in the mountains is good for most of the day. November is also when the region holds its buckwheat flower festival (Lễ hội hoa Tam giác mạch) — the hillsides around Dong Van turn pink with tam giac mach in bloom, and it is worth timing a trip around if you can.
March to May
The other good window, before the summer rain sets in. Cooler than autumn in the early weeks, warming up by May. Fewer travellers on the road than September–November, if quiet matters to you more than a particular season's colours.
June to August — the rainy season
Do not come expecting the trip you have seen in other people's photos. The rain is not a light shower that passes — it is the kind that brings landslides, and roads on this loop have genuinely closed for days at a time in past rainy seasons. I would rather lose a booking than sell someone a week of sitting in a homestay watching a road get cleared.
Where this trip is wrong for you
If your only free week falls in June, July or August, I will still take the booking if you ask me to — but I will tell you honestly first that you are gambling with the weather, not booking a sure thing.
December to February — cold season
Genuinely cold, especially riding at speed or up at altitude near Dong Van (Đồng Văn) and Meo Vac (Mèo Vạc). The roads are quiet and the light is clear, and if you pack proper layers rather than what you'd wear in Hanoi, it is one of the best times to ride — just not a season to underestimate.
When I will tell you not to come
