Places
Meo Vac, at the other end of the pass
Meo Vac (Mèo Vạc) sits at the far end of Ma Pi Leng pass from Dong Van, roughly 90km away by road. Most loop itineraries pass through rather than linger — but the quiet stretch of road just beyond it is one of the least-seen parts of the whole province.
What Meo Vac actually is
The town at the far end of Ma Pi Leng pass from Dong Van — about 90km of riding between the two. Most of my trips stop for a boat on the Nho Que river nearby before continuing into Meo Vac town itself for the night.
The road beyond it
The stretch from Meo Vac toward Bao Lac, on the way into Cao Bang province, is quiet in a way most of the loop no longer is — few tourists ever ride it, since most itineraries turn back toward Ha Giang City from Meo Vac rather than continuing on. It is the kind of road that is a genuine personal favourite among the riders I work with, not a marketing line.
Where to actually stay
A Lành Camping, up on the hillside with a real view down over the town — one of the places on the Local Favourites page.
What first-timers get wrong about Meo Vac
The mistake people make is treating Meo Vac as a lunch stop before Ma Pi Leng and moving straight on. It's quieter than Dong Van simply because most itineraries don't spend the night here — which also means it's less set up for tour groups, in a good way. If you have the extra day, staying over gives you the pass in early light, before the day-trip traffic from Dong Van arrives.
Next step
Ride through it, or go further
Meo Vac is on every loop I run — and the road beyond it, toward Cao Bang, is on one of them specifically.
